Our committee is busy planning the 8th Annual Death’s Door Barbeque Contest, held at the Washington Island Airport, on August 23-24, 2019.  The event is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and has been given a Governor’s Proclamation making our event a state championship.  The DDBBQ event is known as one of the best barbeque contests in the mid-west.

Top professional BBQ teams including some of the best teams in the country are entered.  They will be competing for over $18,000 in prize money and awards. Scoring the event will be 100 percent certified KCBS judges, representing several states. Also attending our event will be thousands of visitors from around the country.  They will pass by your business twice – on the way to and from our event. They are always on the lookout for great places to eat and shop, to bring home a little piece of Door County.

The goal of this contest is to showcase Washington Island and the rest of Door County as an attractive destination.  Our media coverage includes local and regional newspapers, Wisconsin Public Radio and other stations including WDOR that does live remotes from the contest.  We distribute posters, rack cards and banners throughout the County and State. We have also promoted DDBBQ on Cooking with Amy and Good Day Wisconsin on Fox 11 in Green Bay.  We have been featured in Wisconsin Foodie on the Wisconsin Public Television and a video on the Door County Visitors Bureau website.

Our event, on August 24th, will feature live music, Island and non-Island vendors, children’s games and activities, arts and crafts, a Kid’s Que, raffles and plenty of good food and beverages.  Many of the teams will be selling their fabulous BBQ throughout the day.

DDBBQ is a sub-committee of the Washington Island Chamber of Commerce and is a non-profit 501-C4.  Proceeds go to support DOOR CANcer and the Washington Island Community Health Program/Washington Island Food Pantry.  In the past BBQ meat has also been donated to the Island and Door County Food Pantries.

Becoming a sponsor will also give you the opportunity to showcase your business by providing a sample of your product, or attaching a coupon or business card which could be redeemed at your business.  These will be put in “goody bags” that are given to each team and judge, a total of 95. They all look forward to receiving them. In addition, your business name will also appear on two large banners at the contest site showing your support as a sponsor of the event.
